Introduction
Cigarette smoking is the
leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, accounting
for more than 480,000 deaths every year, or 1 of every 5 deaths. In 2015, about 15 of every
100 U.S. adults aged 18 years or older (15.1%) currently* smoked cigarettes.
This means an estimated 36.5 million adults in the United States currently
smoke cigarettes. More than 16 million Americans live with
a smoking-related disease. By Gender2
Men were more likely to be
current cigarette smokers than women. Nearly
17 of every 100 adult men (16.7%) More
than 13 of every 100 adult women (13.6%)
Current cigarette smoking was higher among persons aged 18–24 years,
25–44 years, and 45–64 years than among those aged 65 years and older.
However, these startling statistics have
not stopped many teenagers from picking up this deadly habit. A Stanford
University studies finds
that teenagers who are exposed to anti-smoking curriculum are likely to cut back
on smoking. This Project Based Learning
Activity will engage the student in an Anti-Smoking
Campaign. Your goal is to
convince the entire IMS family (students, staff, administrators and parents) to
never use tobacco or to quit using tobacco, if they currently do. The mission is for every member of the IMS
family to make a conscience decision to not smoke or use tobacco products. You want a TOBACCO FREE…IMS FAMILY! Smoking is a deadly
choice and the goal of this Project is to help the student along with
the rest of the IMS Family to choose not to smoke and in turn “Choose Life.”
